We established how bad sitting can be for our bodies, the question we have now is, what can we do about it? Most of us can’t exactly quit our 9-5 desk jobs in favor of a more active job. It is important to try to fit in a good healthy workout or walk a few times a week, but sometimes we are crunched for time and we miss those important active minutes. The good news is that there are quite a few things that can be done in the office to minimize many of the negative effects of sitting for so long at the office.

To start, one of the easiest things to do is to simply move around. Try to walk about for about a total of ten minutes every hour if possible. This is help keep your blood flowing and keep you from remaining sedentary for too long. Set a reminder on your computer every hour to remind you. If you have a smartwatch, many of them are programmed with a sedentary reminder already. Walk to the water dispenser, walk to your coworkers office to give them a message instead of relying only on email, or take the stairs instead of using the elevator.

Another way to add some extra steps into your work day to keep you feeling your best is to park farther away from the doors than normal. Take a walking lunch to the cafe down the block to increase your heart rate and get your blood pumping. This will help rejuvenate your mind and body.

The next way to avoid all the negative effects of sitting is to pay attention to your posture. By ensuring that you do not hunch over your desk, or hold your body in unhealthy positions you can avoid the added strain to your back, neck, and shoulder muscles. Make sure that you also move while sitting. Every so often take a little stretch while sitting down. Stretch your neck side to side, lean over the sides of your chair, or just stand up for a moment and touch your toes. Adding these simple steps to your daily routine will help you feel better and can help you feel more awake and productive at work.
